Beginners Guide to Kratom

The Prodigious Plant

Over the last 7 or so years,  I've been able to rely on kratom to help treat chronic back & knee pain, stay motivated, improve mood and more. This plant is the real deal, yet surprisingly still a bit unknown. For some, it's something enjoyable to relax or socialize with and for others, it can be a big change to their life.

Before we get into this, if you are simply just looking for the best Kratom - check out HappyHippoHerbals or CoastlineKratom. I'll explain why I recommend them, what to avoid when buying kratom, and how it has made a positive impact in my life.

What Is Kratom?

In short kratom is a safe, inexpensive and legal plant you can take to treat anxiety, pain, depression, boost productivity and more. Also known as Mitragyna Speciosa, kratom is a deciduous plant native to Southeast Asia (mostly Indonesia) that hits mainly on the delta receptors in the brain. Although it behaves similar to a μ-opioid receptor, it's not an opiate. This means much milder effects than any opioid, but is also much safer.

I’m not going to hide the fact that you can become addicted to kratom. It’s certainly possible with heavy daily usage.  The good thing is it can be easily avoided through keeping tolerance low by rotating strains and other accessible options like washouts (article coming soon).

Different Types

Stimulating types for increasing Energy, Motivation, & Productivity. These are White or Thai strains often called 'Maeng Da'

Mood Boosting and Relaxing types best for helping things like Anxiety or Pain. These are your Bali, Borneo or Red strains

Benefits of All Types

- Has been used to help anxiety & depression
- Combats withdrawals from suboxone, tramadol, etc.

- Manages pain
- Lowers blood pressure
- Suppresses appetite
- Helps treat PE

How To Take Kratom

- Toss & Wash- Toss it in, take a big sip of water, mix it around then down the hatch. Tricky but efficient once you get used to it

- Mix with Water or Juice- Stir well since it doesn’t dissolve easily

- Make Tea Out of it- This is the most time consuming way but a lot of people stand by it. Just boil the powder in a pot for several minutes then strain the water to remove it. Coffee filters can work too.

What You Need To Know

The most important thing you need to know is that the quality of kratom can vary a lot, and not a lot of vendors (especially smokeshops) supply kratom that actually works like it should. This is part why kratom is unknown, since many end up writing it off from a poor experience.

Recommended below is one of if not the best vendor I’ve tried so far- but let me know if you find some contenders. Whether or not you use my recommendation, it’s a good idea to end up trying others overtime to help better compare.

- Avoid extracts- Skyrockets your tolerance. Regular kratom is a powder while extracts are sold in a liquid form.

- Avoid kratom capsules- If you prefer to use capsules to avoid the taste, better to end up doing it yourself than having to pay extra for it.

- Side effects- If you take too much, there is potential for nausea. Most often taking too much means you’ll become a bit drowsy.

- Sold as an incense- Although kratom is legal to buy, possess and sell- it can’t legally be sold for human consumption since it’s not approved by the FDA. Therefor, it's sold as an incense and it's why you may see some say ‘burning kratom’ instead of ‘drinking’ or ‘ingesting' it.

My Recommended Vendor

I recommend HappyHippoHerbals.

With a vendor that actually cleans and washes the kratom first (instead of you just getting handpicked blended leaves), it's nice to know what you're getting. The price is a little higher than average, but isn't plagued by common fillers so you don't use as much (and they include samples). They also have phenibut and kava available which can be great for anxiety or just relaxing too.

Beginner Strains

1. Happy Hippo I  It’s an all around balanced Moderate strain which shows all that kratom has to offer. It’s actually a Bali/Indonesian blend. Odds are you’ll love it. If you only want to try 1 strain, this is it.
2. Red Hot Hippo  Despite it being red veined (usually means slower), it being from Thailand brings the properties of a Fast strain.  Best for productivity and improving energy levels.
3. Top Shelf Bali  The staple Slow strain that is synonymous with kratom.  Best to boost your mood & help relax.

If you’re not sure which to try, their Beginner's Pack works well to represent what the three types of kratom have to offer.

That's It!

That's all you need to know for now to start taking advantage of what kratom has to offer. Whether you're looking for a natural pain option, a nice way to relax, a tool to help anxiety & depression, or any of its benefits- I hope it creates a positive impact on your life as it did mine. If you ever have any questions, feel free to email me at or comment on my YouTube video - Cheers.
